Jowler Creek Winery grew out of the union of two very different “birds” from two different parts of the country.
Growing up as the fifth generation on a cattle and row crop operation in central Missouri, you might say farming is in Jason’s blood. Staying close to his roots, Jason later majored in Agriculture Journalism at the University of Missouri-Columbia.
Colleen grew up in the heart of California’s Central Coast wine country. In fact, the movie Sideways was filmed in and around her hometown – Santa Maria. While in college at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo, she studied viticulture and enology and started crafting her own wines.
Fate (and the critters at the Kansas City Zoo) brought these two love birds together, first settling in Kansas City, Missouri where they began making wine as a hobby in their basement. In 2003, Jason and Colleen moved their nest to a new habitat along side the historic Jowler Creek in Platte County, Missouri, just northwest of the Kansas City metro area.
To mate both of their areas of expertise, Jason and Colleen decided to start their own fully-integrated boutique vineyard and winery.
After much research and preparation, the couple decided to break ground and plant 250 Norton vines in the spring of 2004. Norton was recently named Missouri’s state grape and has shown consistency in producing a premium, red, full-body wine that’s loaded with tannins…similar to a wine produced in California or France.
In the spring of 2005 Jowler Creek’s vineyard began its growth and expansion by planting more Norton vines and a second grape variety called Vignoles. Fully infected with the vine-growing bug, Jason and Colleen expanded the vineyard three-fold in 2006 – including more Norton, additional Vignoles vines, a third variety called Traminette, and a fourth variety known well in the old world wine regions of France called Cabernet Franc.
Jason and Colleen decided to take the 2007 planting season off since Baby Addie arrived in late April 2007, but added 1,100 new Traminette and Cabernet Franc vines to max out the carrying capacity of the vineyard site in April 2008.
Jowler Creek officially became a bonded winery in the summer of 2005 and began making wine commercially that Fall.
